Universal Music is Back on TikTok

May 7th 2024

Following a months-long standoff, Universal Music Group (UMG) has reinstated its music on TikTok

It marks the end of a dispute regarding fair compensation and artificial intelligence's impact on creative rights. The move led to discussions within the music industry and raised questions about the dynamics between content creators, platforms, and copyright holders.

Now, with a new licensing agreement in place, UMG's music, featuring some of the world's top artists, returns to the popular social media platform. The deal promises "improved remuneration" for UMG's roster of songwriters and artists, supported by increased promotional and commercial arrangements. Moreover, artists' rights are protected by stringent safeguards to prevent misuse of generative artificial intelligence.

UMG's stance appeared somewhat compromised when Taylor Swift reinstated her music on TikTok independently despite its initial withdrawal. Swift's unique copyright ownership over her recordings underscored the complexities in the music industry's relationship with digital platforms.

Lucian Grainge, CEO of UMG, described the resolution as a "decidedly positive outcome." While the financial specifics of the deal were not disclosed, Grainge stated that artists and songwriters would see greater compensation compared to previous agreements.

In a joint statement, UMG and TikTok outlined their shared vision for fostering artistic integrity and economic fairness. In addition to music licensing, the partnership will leverage TikTok's commerce capabilities and global promotional campaigns for UMG's diverse roster.

Especially important is the pledge to fight unauthorised AI-generated content, a threat to traditional copyright principles. To protect the interests of human artists, TikTok has committed to limiting the dissemination of such content and enhancing attribution practices.
